Transforming farmers’ lives with climate and pest resilient seeds in Kaduna State, Nigeria

“My name is Mallam Idris Biye, but my people here call me Yellow Biye, perhaps because I am fair in complexion, compared to many of my neighbours. I live in Biye Village, Kaduna State, Nigeria; I farm maize, soybean, sorghum and millet. But my favourite is maize.

Biye has always been an agrarian community and we love farming very much. My parents and grandparents were farmers, and we are proud to be among the very few people that feed humanity. But recently, we discover that our land is not as fertile as it used to be. When we were children, we witnessed huge harvests by our parents and, therefore, believed that farming was a profitable economic venture. My parents and grandparents built their houses and homes from proceeds in agricultural businesses.  They travelled to Giwa, Funtua, Katsina and Kaduna to sell off their grains in exchange for money. Although education was not that common then, we had everything we wanted while growing up. But today, things have changed for bad for farmers. We no more understand the onsets of rains, as they change too frequently and unpredictably. There is also the problem of very long dry spells, and even drought in the midst of supposedly rainy season. So we were really concerned.

         Added to these, is the problem of high incidences of pests and diseases on our maize today may be fall army worms, tomorrow it is streak! Then there is striga, that parasite weed that has become a nightmare to maize farmers in our area. All these put together, we became unsure and worried of what our future as farmers would be and more worried about the future of our children. Like many of my village men, I thought of changing my profession maybe learn mason, be a trader or some other work. But even then, I was seriously short of cash. Already, I had withdrawn two of my children from the school they were attending because I couldn’t meet their fee obligation. I relocated them to a cheaper school, which was also very low in standard, compared to the previous one. The small kiosk I operated to augment family income remained mostly closed because it was out of stock.

          This frustration led to one thing and another until we came in contact with NAERLS, which is the STMA Promotion organization in Nigeria. First, we made a passionate appeal to the NAERLS Adopted Village Project to make Biye village one of its focal areas. Luckily for us, we were adopted. They built an Agricultural Research and Extension Outreach Centre (AREOC) for us; facilitated us into forming strong farmers groups; linked us to credit facilities with a Microfinance Bank in Zaria and provided us several extension materials from which we learn a lot in agricultural production, marketing and utilization.

      Through the NAERLS Adopted village project, the STMA Promotional team got to us, and this tremendously changed our life. My major concern in my maize farms had been on how to access maize varieties that can withstand long dry spells, striga-infested soils and soils low on nitrogen. The STMA Project is like a miracle, a godsend! The team work with us farmers as equals in the agricultural venture, not like some ‘superior people’. The field demonstrations we had together was very participatory, a learning process for all of us. Besides linking us to seeds and other agro-input suppliers, we receive so much extension and advisory support from them.

      Just in three years (2016-2018), my story has changed! The STMA project empowered me with the necessary information and linkages to become a proud farmer again! My 2018 harvest was a bumper. And I’m not the only one; all of us that embraced the STMA innovation have been smiling to the bank, and we’re well respected in our community. I recently purchased a new motorbike and I conveniently feed my household with nutritious foods through proceeds from my maize farms. My children are all back to our schools of choice and high standards. My shop in Samaru Market is fully stocked. In all, I am happy to be identified with the NAERLS-STMA team.       In recognition of the impact of STMA activities on our farming businesses in Biye community, our farmers’ cooperatives presented to NAERLS a Distinguished Award of Excellence in supporting development activities in the community.

DTMA Project urged to “make Africa the bread basket of the world”

Speaking in September, during the third annual planning meeting of the DTMA Project, Tom Lumpkin, CIMMYT Director General urged project teams and national collaborators to be passionate about developing and delivering improved maize varieties to farmers, especially by linking up with seed companies. Lumpkin emphasized the need for climate-ready maize that will respond to the needs of smallholder farmers’ mixed cropping systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

“Today, we’re here working on a noble project to develop drought tolerant varieties that will change the lives of the poor. Let us be more than just scientists, let us be champions!” he said. “Let us make Africa the bread basket of the world. In this way we will honor the late Dr Norman Borlaug.” Borlaug, who passed away on 12 September 09 was a 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and was considered the world’s leading hunger fighter (https://www.cimmyt.org/english/wps/media/farewellBorlaug.htm)
The DTMA Project teams, together with collaborators from national agricultural research systems (NARS), seed companies and universities, were meeting at Masvingo in Zimbabwe, to review progress made in 2009, share insights and plan for 2010.  The teams were also joined by senior government officials from Zimbabwe, the Project Advisory Board, consultants and David Bergvinson, Senior Program Officer, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Zimbabwean officials were Dr S. Mlambo, former Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization and Irrigation Development, and Dr N.R. Gata, Principal Director Department of Research and Specialist Services.  In their remarks, they confirmed their government’s recognition and support for the DTMA project’s work on mitigating drought. They thanked CIMMYT-IITA and the Foundation for continued support through capacity building of national scientists and improvement of research facilities, especially at Chiredzi, one of the project’s drought screening sites.
“The Zimbabwe government will collaborate with the DTMA Project to ensure that the developed maize varieties reach intended regional users, by removing import-export restrictions to increase the availability and movement of these developed varieties,” said Dr Mlambo.
During the same event, the Zimbabwe national maize program was presented with the DTMA excellence awards for southern Africa for breeding by Lumpkin. The Zimbabwe team was selected for effectively developing maize varieties that will be used for the benefit of Zimbabwean farmers and their counterparts within the region; who have started feeling the effects of recent recurrent droughts and climate change.
“I congratulate the national maize program for winning this award while working under difficult economic circumstances, and for putting Zimbabwe’s research on the global map,” said Dr S. Mlambo.

iita-dgDuring the week of 15 – 19 September 2008, the Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa Project (DTMA) team met at the scenic IITA campus in Ibadan, Nigeria, to review progress made in 2008, share insights and plan for 2009. They were joined by the Project Advisory Board as well as collaborators from national agricultural research systems (NARS), seed companies and universities.

“The DTMA Project team represents a good balance in expertise, which combined with the maize drought tolerance technology, has great potential of reaching 30 to 40 million people,” said Hartmann, the IITA Director General (in the photo here), during the meeting’s opening.

“The DTMA Project needs to focus on local production, especially with the emerging twin challenges of climate change and the energy crisis. We also need to let other players own the process for sustainability; thus we need an exit strategy,” he added.

Marianne Bänziger, CIMMYT Global Maize Program Director remarked, “There is tremendous power in Africa – the creativity of its researchers, the large number of newly emerging seed companies and farmers who yearn to make their lives better. We need to tap into this power if we want to generate impact.”

Presentations highlighted achievements made in developing, disseminating and targeting new drought tolerant varieties as well as building the capacity of project collaborators. For example, the DTMA Project developed largescale drought screening sites in Kiboko, Kenya, and Ikene, Nigeria. There the first crop of maize under managed drought stress was grown to increase the availability of drought tolerant maize varieties in sub-Saharan Africa. Also, in seeking to motivate and move breeders toward data-driven breeding programs, the DTMA Project developed and promotes new maize data management tools – such as the International Maize Information Service (IMIS) and Fieldbook – freely available from the DTMA website (dtma.cimmyt.org).

“The DTMA project provides opportunities in form of germplasm, varieties, breeder seed and trained personnel, and we encourage you to optimally use them,” said Wilfred Mwangi, DTMA Project Leader. During 2008, DTMA provided training in state-of-the-art maize breeding and variety release approaches as well as technology adoption studies and seed business management. Scientists from IITA, CIMMYT, NARS and established seed companies worked together to design and run the courses.

During the meeting, the participants held discussions along thematic and regional lines (Eastern, Western and Southern Africa), compared their experiences and challenges, and proposed strategies to improve the DTMA Project. The discussions centered on diverse aspects of variety development; testing and release; technology dissemination; breeder and foundation seed production; as well as production and marketing of certified seed.

“One size does not fit all” was the meeting’s major conclusion. Africa is diverse and the various in-country teams will strive to carefully target their investments to mission-critical bottlenecks and effective scale-up strategies in the seed value chain. The teams tackled this challenge by beginning to develop seed and impact road maps, leaving no doubt that the impact targets of the DTMA Project will be achieved.
